Gout can involve the knee as well as the classic big-toe joint. The location alone does not confirm the diagnosis because infection, injury and other forms of arthritis can also cause a swollen knee.

If the diagnosis is uncertain, clinical assessment and sometimes joint aspiration can help clarify the cause.
